Writer. Storyteller. Dreamer.
Stories do more than entertain. They guide us. They are roadmaps to the world we are trying to navigate and the one we are wanting to create. More than an art form, storytelling is the act of connecting big picture ideas to the individual, using words as the throughline.
Whether you are a new or seasoned author, or are a small business or nonprofit looking for audience engagement, let me help you write your story you want to share with the world. Check out my list of freelance writing & editing services here.
Megan J. Wheless is a writer known for her rich descriptions and keen observations of emotional nuances and connections.
Raised in Central Illinois, she infuses her writing with a blend of Midwestern sensibility, magical realism, and genuine tenderness. A lover of the natural world, Megan incorporates the landscapes of the prairie and woodlands where she grew up in her writing, giving the reader a strong sense of place.
For nearly twenty years she was an English teacher in Southwestern Illinois, instructing various writing and literature classes. She credits the many insightful discussions she had with her students on a wide range of literature and topics as having the biggest influence in her writing career. In 2016, Megan took a sabbatical and moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina where she had many adventures, the best one of which was meeting and then marrying her husband, an artist and baker with quick wit and boy-next-door charm.
For the past ten years, Megan has also been a freelance writer and editor for small businesses, nonprofit organizations, writers, and independent publishers. (Click here for more information.)
She and her husband now call Northern Illinois home. They live on the Big Prairie with their two cats, Bootsie and Gracie, and their elderly dog, Lucy. When she's not writing, Megan can be found gardening at home or hiking the trails and garnering inspiration from the flora and fauna that surround her. Her second novel, The Book of Secrets, is slated for publication with Warren Publishing in Spring 2027.
